This standard specifies the method for directly determining the water content in petroleum products and similar compounds using an automatic titrator. The range of water content measured by direct titration method is 10 mg/kg~25 000 mg/kg. This standard also specifies a method for indirectly determining the water content of the sample. By heating, the water in the sample is separated and carried by a dry inert gas to a Karl Fischer titrator for analysis. The interference of mercaptans, sulfides, sulfur, and other compounds with the test method can be found in Chapter 4. This standard is applicable to the determination of water content in additives, lubricating oils, base oils, automatic transmission fluids, solvents, and other petroleum products using commercially available Karl Fischer Coulomb reagents. By selecting the appropriate sample injection amount, the water content measurement range of this standard ranges from milligrams per kilogram level to mass percentage level.
